The Hāpai Access Card has the potential to change the life of a person with a disability by providing them with the confidence to go out into their community knowing that their are businesses that are committed to providing them with an excellent customer experience. The challenge for some people with a disability is applying for the card as it is usually done online. The role of the Hāpai Access Card Application Facilitator (CAF) is to assist a card applicant in getting the card.
Usually a request for assistance comes from a phone call, email or via the Hāpai Foundation website. Alternatively an NGO, GP, or other third party may request assistance for one of their clients. The CAF will initiate the assistance using the most appropriate means taking into account the disability of the applicant. This could mean sending and email, making a telephone call, or making a time to meet at the office.
From this initial communication the assistance may be fairly simple, or may be quite involved depending upon the path taken to make the application. The most complex assistance will require the identification of the relevant documentation that relates to the applicants disability, scanning and then uploading that documentation as part on the online application process. A photo is required as part of the application and that may need to be adjusted to meet the requirements of the card. The CAF may be required to assist the applicant in making payment for the card. The card costs NZ$30 for 3 years and there are a variety of ways it can be paid including credit/debit card, bank transfer and cash. There is also the potential for a free, or discounted card dependent upon the financial situation.
The processing of the card application is done by our partner organisation in the UK, Nimbus Disability. The CAF will assist in resolving any queries that are raised by the Nimbus processing team. Full training will be given to a CAF staff volunteer, although the ideal candidate will have a reasonable degree of computer literacy. The work will be conducted from our lovely office at Kilmarnock Enterprise in Wigram. There is easy parking onsite, and a bus stop directly outside the building. The office has a small kitchen, with microwave and fridge. There is a lounge area to enjoy a break from the work. We are committed to making access to the Hāpai Access Card as easy as possible. So based on demand we are looking at setting up "pop-up" assistance at libraries and other public spaces, and the CAF will have the opportunity to be part of that initiative.
