Prathiba has been volunteering with Hagley Learning Centre since March 2026. She signed up because she wanted to connect with people, understand NZ standards and learn more about workplace culture. In her role, she assists English tutors with teaching both conversational and workplace English.
For Prathiba, the best part of volunteering has been seeing the students improve. She finds it particularly rewarding when they share their achievements with her. “I’m happy if I feel empowered helping another person to improve and stay motivated in their life.”
Volunteering has also given Prathiba a real sense of pride. “It has surprised me that I can do this much. I wasn’t confident about myself back then. Continuous meeting with people has helped me open up.”
Through volunteering, Prathiba has learnt a lot about people, her surroundings and herself. She has come to recognise how capable she really is.
To anyone considering volunteering, Prathiba says, “I would definitely encourage them to join any volunteering in the field they want to. I volunteer because I love this place, it’s my second home! I love all the people here, tutors, students, everyone”.
