“I was managing a chemical company and had employed a young man who had worked as a chef at the Hohepa farm in Sabys Rd in Christchurch – he always shared great memories of his time at Hohepa and of how rewarding it was to be a part of such a group, every day was memorable and enjoyable just being around the group.
When I retired, I was looking for something to do and help out in a way to be useful somewhere. Thinking back, it was an easy choice really. I contacted Hohepa to see if there was anything they needed that I could help with in a volunteering way. I was introduced to Stephen Roberts who was looking after the adventure group. Stephen had a spot to fill for a volunteer support person due to an injury. I was successful and started with Stephen’s group about 3 years ago and continue to enjoy and look forward to each Friday.
Volunteering is a commitment that I enjoy so much with a special group of people that sometimes need a little bit of support or assistance along the way.
It’s not hard to volunteer. It’s very rewarding to give a little time if you have the inclination and time. Just do it, and you will personally reap the benefits.
There is always a need to assist where required, to see the benefits to each individual and see a smile on their face when they achieve something that’s a little bit difficult or challenging – you certainly get this with the adventure group from time to time.
Don’t hesitate or procrastinate, just volunteer and enjoy!”
