Our volunteers help reduce re-offending and make a real difference to people's lives. Join our teams presenting programmes of simple but highly practical philosophy to groups of people incarcerated in Christchurch prisons.
Through interactive group discussions, we help guide prisoner students to make better decisions and wiser choices, so that they can make lasting changes to their lives - for everyone's benefit. The Freedom Philosophy Society is a charitable volunteer organisation that has already successfully introduced these courses to several prisons throughout New Zealand. We've received excellent feedback from prisoners, volunteers, and Corrections staff.
Previous experience of philosophy or tutoring / facilitating / teaching groups, is really helpful, though not essential!
We provide all the material content, training, and practical guidance.
We are seeking mature and reliable volunteers with an open-mind and the right attitude - with a few hours a week to spare.
You can work as part of a team alongside more experienced volunteers - and learn as you go.
If you are still on your own self-development journey, flexible, and have a calm, mature outlook on life, we'd love to hear from you.

A Ministry of Justice background check is required for this role.
Generally you will need to be available for about 2-3 hours per week, for at least 6-7 weeks, but ideally several times per year.
That's because we run 6 courses per year. Each of our 6 courses run for 6 weeks, with 1 session per week, and each session takes about 75 minutes.
At present we operate in 2 Christchurch prisons, one on Tuesday mornings (and early afternoon), the other on Wednesday mornings.
Please get in touch if you want to learn more and might just be able to help.
