Cat & Kitten Foster Parent (Waimakariri)

Organisation:
Cat Care
Location:
Home Based
Category:
Animal Care
Hours:
Both/Flexible

As a foster parent, you will provide temporary care, love and support to rescued cats and kittens until they are ready for adoption. Fostering a cat or kitten(s) is a truly rewarding experience - all you need is time, patience and a love for our feline friends.

Cats and kittens in our care come from various backgrounds - some are friendly and healthy, while others are stray, abandoned or neglected. Most range in age from four to 10 weeks, though we take in felines of all ages.

Your primary responsibilities as a foster parent will include:

  • Caring for your furry guests; Providing food, fresh water, and a clean, cozy environment to help them feel safe and loved.
  • Playtime and cuddles; Helping your fosters grow into confident, well-adjusted pets through play, affection and introducing them to everyday household experiences - including interactions with other pets and children if applicable.
  • Keeping them healthy; Administering routine flea and worm treatments and keeping accurate records.
  • Road trips to the vet; Transporting your fosters to our trusted vets in Rangiora for health checks, vaccinations, de-sexing and microchipping.
  • Finding their perfect match; Hosting potential adopters in your home and helping match your fosters with loving, permanent families. This also includes writing up fun and engaging bios for your fosters and taking adorable photos, which we share on Facebook to help them find their forever homes.

Since Cat Care does not have a shelter, all rehoming is conducted directly between the foster parent and the adopting family.

We provide everything you need to foster, including all necessary supplies and ongoing support, training and guidance from our experienced team.

Our volunteer network is the heart of what we do - without our team of foster parents, we simply couldn't operate.

Requirements:
  • Must reside north of the Waimakariri River (not Christchurch)
  • A safe, secure environment where fosters cannot escape but have enough space to explore and exercise
  • Time, patience and a love for cats
  • Willingness to maintain health and adoption records
  • Have access to transport for vet visits
  • Ability to host potential adopters for meet-and-greet visits
Time commitment:

While summer - kitten season - is our busiest time of the year, fostering varies depending on the needs of the cat(s) or kitten(s), and the season. Some may need short-term care of a few weeks, while others require longer stays. Fostering is also flexible. For example, if you have a holiday coming up, let us know and we can organise another foster parent to "babysit" while you're away.

Getting started:
The first step is to express your interest by filling out the form below. We will then put you in touch directly with the organisation for more information on the role and how to proceed.
