Job summary:
Volunteers will advise callers on safely transporting birds to the hospital when necessary or refer them to a more suitable facility based on location, species, or situation. This is a shared role, with responsibilities shared among a team of 2 volunteers (one week on, one week off - 8am-9pm).
Key responsibilities:
• Answer incoming calls promptly, professionally, and record details accurately.
• Collect key details about the bird’s condition, location, and situation.
• Provide clear and accurate advice on how to safely bring birds to the hospital.
• Redirect callers to other facilities or agencies when appropriate.
• Communicate with hospital staff to prepare for incoming patients when needed.
Skills & qualifications:
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Calm, compassionate approach when speaking with distressed callers.
• Ability to assess situations and offer appropriate advice quickly.
• Willingness to learn basic information about native bird species and wildlife handling protocols.
• Comfortable using simple call logs or digital systems for record-keeping.
• Reliability and a collaborative attitude, as part of a small volunteer team.
• This role may suit someone with a medical or veterinary background.
This role requires you to be 'on-call'. One week on, one week off - 8am-9pm. Some times of the year will be very quiet, while others may be very busy. May suit a retired person or someone who works from home.
