Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer Observers (a.k.a. Professional People-Watchers!)

Organisation:
City Mission, Christchurch
Location:
Central
Category:
Research
Hours:
Working Hours

Do you have a knack for noticing the little things? Ever catch yourself people-watching and thinking, “I could totally do this for a job”? Well, here’s your chance, minus the paycheck, but with the warm fuzzies helping the Christchurch City Mission keep our site safe and welcoming!

We’re looking for Volunteer Observers to help us gather baseline info about patterns of activity around our Hereford Street site. Your mission (should you choose to accept it) is to watch, record, and report.

• Station yourself in one of our “hot zones” and record what activity you see.
o Vehicle activity
o People activity
o Group gathering activity
o If groups are gathering (how many, how long).
o Spot any not-so-great behaviour (rowdy words, suspicious substances, dodgy drinks, property damage).
o Note how it’s handled

• Keep everything objective (no gossip column vibes here!).

We have three main “watch windows”:
• Early birds: 7:30–10:00
• Lunch crowd: 11:30–14:00
• Afternoon shuffle: 15:00–17:00

Join us as a Volunteer Observer and put your people-watching skills to good use!
Full training will be given.

Requirements:

We’re looking for volunteers who are reliable, detail orientated, discreet, comfortable working alone, and someone keen to uphold the values of respect, dignity and safety.

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment:

The project is expected to last approximately 3 weeks.
Peak periods are Monday & Tuesday; however we can be flexible around times and days for the right volunteers(s).
This could ideally suit a student during semester break.

Getting started:
The first step is to express your interest by filling out the form below. We will then put you in touch directly with the organisation for more information on the role and how to proceed.
