SEST is a group of community volunteers with different backgrounds and skills, with a common commitment to supporting our communities when emergencies happen. The work of the SEST is varied and can include: setting up and running a Civil Defence Centre, outreach and door knocking, conducting welfare needs assessments and helping people to navigate to further support. The team is part of the Selwyn Civil Defence response and is managed by the council Emergency Management Team.
If that sounds like you then come along to our information evening to meet some of the current team members, ask questions and find out more about this great team and their mahi. We encourage people from all backgrounds, cultures and abilities to come along, your unique perspective and experience are valued here.
The information evening is on the 29th September in Rolleston. You can register here: https://events.humanitix.com/selwyn-emergency-support-team-information-evening-gfhfd68z
We are looking for people who:
Have the desire and ability to support people and families in disaster and emergency situations;
Are caring and calm, even when under pressure;
Can demonstrate a practical and commonsense approach;
Are enthusiastic, committed and have a can-do attitude;
Can commit to an initial block of training and on-going fortnightly trainings;
Have good written and spoken English (we’d love if you speak other languages too);
Are computer literate;
Can pass a police check.
Training is 2 hours every fortnight on a Monday night. The dates are set at the beginning of the year.
An initial round of training will also be required, this is sometimes in the evening and on weekends. We also have exercises which you will need to participate in.
Your role will be to support the community when there is an emergency response and in early recovery. This will often be at short notice, so a degree of flexibility will be needed. We have enough members in the team that you aren't expected to be ready to deploy at all times, and you won't be required to be on call. We know that you have commitments in your own life too.
Getting started:
The first step is to express your interest by filling out the form below.
We will then put you in touch directly with the organisation for more information on the role and how to proceed.
