Members meet each week on Tuesday evening for fellowship including a meal and a short meeting, usually with a guest speaker, all of which is about two hours. Attendance at meetings is voluntary but is a chance to build friendships with fellow members who are mostly retired or approaching retirement. We run fundraising projects to support community based activities, such as youth leadership, buying computers for low decile primary schools, purchasing aids for early childhood education and supporting outdoor education. We run a student speech contest for local schools. We also support wider Rotary initiatives such as driver education for high school students and supporting the international effort to eliminate polio. We collect medical equipment surplus to local providers to be sent to the Pacific. Our most important fund raising project is growing new potatoes and selling them in north west Christchurch before Christmas.
Our members are mostly 50 and above and wanting to spend their free time mixing with like minded folk to support community activities. Our fund raising is entirely voluntary, depending on the personal circumstances of our members. It includes joining with fellow members supporting diverse activities such as assisting with street appeals and community groups needing a hand with fairs and the like. Our main fund raising project is growing, harvesting and selling new potatoes for Christmas.
Apart from being reasonably regular in coming to the Tuesday evening meetings the time commitment is very flexible and members join with those activities that suit their personal time constraints.
