Are you over 18?
Do you live in Christchurch?
Have one hour free each week?
And like to have fun?
If you answered 'YES' to the above questions and want make a positive lasting impact on a young life......then why not apply for the role of volunteer mentor - it's a role you will be incredibly rewarded by, and it's good for your physical and mental health too!
As a mentor for Big Brothers Big Sisters you will be professionally matched with a child from our community, and for one hour each week, you’ll spend time together building a friendship and sharing interests.
Our children do not have high or complex needs, they just need time, friendship and a little bit of extra care and support due to the circumstances they live in.
The gift of mentoring ensures they can step out of their lives each week, engage in activities and indulge their interests with a trusted role model and adult friend beside them. Mentors gently open doors to new experiences, encourage and support taiohi to explore and engage, developing their confidence, resilience, skills and building healthy pursuits.
Activities can be anything you both enjoy......that are free or low cost, such as walking the dog, bike rides, going for a hot chocolate, shooting hoops, baking, arts and crafts, walks, singing, playing at the park, board games - it's all about doing things you both enjoy and just spending regular time together, one-on-one.
We provide full training, Mentor / Mentee and Mentor only events, and our staff will check in with you each month, and are available for contact and support at any time.
Mentoring sessions can be during work / school hours, after work / school, or at the weekends......it's up to you!
The process of becoming a Big, includes an info session to find out more, followed by a police / background check, interview and training evening. On average it takes up to about 4 weeks to complete the application process.
If YOU are a good friend and have time once a week to give one of our young people, we'd love to hear from you!
Unable to volunteer, we understand, instead you may considder a donation to support more young people to benefit from our program.
