We have about 40 volunteer drivers who cover the Selwyn Central Community Care area and we support clients in Rolleston, West Melton, Weedons, Templeton and Burnham. Most of our clients are elderly and need hospital, doctor or dentist appointments and we also transport regulars weekly to Day Clubs and classes throughout the city and Selwyn. We also have a team of 12 drivers who deliver Meals on Wheels in the Rolleston area three days a week. We offer basic gardening services and will visit lonely, isolated people in their homes on a regular basis. We have a van in which we take small groups to cafes for morning tea, and day trips throughout Selwyn and this is very popular.
We require our drivers to have a current WOF and Vehicle Registration, to have a clean and current driving licence and vehicle insurance (third party minimum). A satisfactory police check and two referees are also necessary. When completing the application form, the volunteer is able to inform us of the days and time they are available. When they begin to drive for us, we supply them with a first aid kit and require them to do a Confident Driving Course for Mature Drivers which the Selwyn District Council run once a year. The drivers are aware that the client is asked for a Voluntary Donation which they are asked to either put in an envelope and hand to the driver or pay via online banking.
The time they work is at their convenience. When a client requests a drive the Volunteer Coordinator will contact a driver to ask if they are available. If they are unavailable, that's not a problem - we have other volutneers we can contact. We ask clients to give us a couple of days notice when a drive is required, but this isn't always possible. Some drivers will do regular drives every week, others will be called upon more occasionally - as and when our clients ask for a driver and as and when the driver is available. We are able to pay the volunteer for their petrol expenses.
We also provide drivers for Meals on Wheels and most of these drivers will drive just once per month. Currently we do not have funding to reimburse our drivers for this service.
