We have 30 drivers who cover the Selwyn Central Community Care area mainly based in Rolleston and West Melton. We look after clients in West Melton, Weedons, Templeton and Burnham.
Our drivers drive up to 3000 kilometres a month to various venues and we average between 80 and 110 drives a month. Most of our clients are elderly and need hospital, doctor or dentist appointments and we also transport regulars weekly to Homeshares, Day Clubs and classes throughout the city and Selwyn. We also have a team of 13 drivers who deliver Meals on Wheels in the Rolleston area three days a week. We offer basic gardening services and will visit lonely isolated people in their homes on a regular basis. We have a van in which we take clients on afternoon trips throughout Selwyn and this very popular.
We require our drivers to have a police check and to supply us with two referees. They fill in a standard form giving us their details and outlining the days and time they wish to work. I visit with them to ascertain their suitablility for driving and we supply them with a first aid kit and require them to do a Confident Driving Course for Mature Drivers which the Selwyn District Council run once a year. The drivers are aware that the client is asked for a Voluntary Donation which they are asked to put in an envelope an hand on to the treasurer.
The time they work is at their convenience. When I hear from a client I contact a driver who I think would be able to do this drive and if they are unable to do this not to feel bad....they are volunteers and like us all have busy lives. Most of my regular drivers will do 2 - 3 drives a week and other ones less as they have other committents. They are able to claim their mileage once a month. The time of every drive may differ and I endeavour to find out before contacting the driver how long the client will be.
