Governance of an organisation is a vital part of ensuring that it is operating at its best, following best practice and professional standards for all its work. Woolston Development Project Incorporated is an incorporated society and registered charity which has been operating since 1988.

Requirements:
  • Ideally you will have governance experience. Whether this has been on a committee for a sports or other type of recreational club or on the board of a charitable trust does not necessarily matter. You may have served on your church's parish council or vestry or you might have served on a school's board of trustees.
  • A high level of professionalism. Knowing the limits of your knowledge and being prepared to upskill is very helpful. As an employer, experience of managing staff and complying with employment legislation is important. Understanding the risks of not complying with such legislation is really important too.
  • We are particularly seeking people with an understanding of employment legislation, promotion, best practice in social services, OSCAR sector and the like.
  • If you have a legal background, we would love to hear from you, especially as our organisation needs to reregister under the Incorporated Societies Act 2022 shortly.
  • You must care about the vulnerable and marginalised in our community.
  • An understanding of the difference between management and governance.

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment:

Board meeting of 1 - 2 hours each month. Currently held on a Tuesday evening at 6pm.
Reading of board papers and any emails sent out to the board during the month - varies depending on what the board needs to do.
Subcommittee work - this varies with the subcommittee and may just involve reading a report from the manager and feeding back to the manager about it or it may be guiding the manager through the process of dealing with staffing issues.
